The Challenge

When digital devices are seized for examination, their ability to connect to networks, the internet or other devices must be considered. Modern smartphones – including unmodified iOS and Android OS – communicate using a range of wireless RF technologies.

Device-to-device Bluetooth payload communication can occur even when a handset is switched off or powered down – and the availability of bespoke operating systems such as GrapheneOS for Google Pixel introduces additional risks. Crucially, technology is advancing exponentially, with increasing concerns around remote wipe and device location.

Device handling is governed by the Forensic Science Regulator’s Codes of Practice 2023 (Section 108.4). Assisting law enforcement in preserving and securing evidence is the primary focus of our Digital Device Shielding division.

Standards and Certification

Each enclosure is tested to BS EN 50147-1 or IEEE 299 and the shielding effectiveness can be verified by a UKAS-accredited test laboratory. A full test certification is provided on completion. Annual re-testing can be carried out as part of an ongoing maintenance schedule.
